When the Courtauld Commitment was launched in July 2005 to reduce packaging, over 90% of the UK grocery market signed up to cut the environmental impact of carrier bags.

The Bags of Ethics mark was developed as a standard to guarantee that environmentally friendly bags are manufactured in a sustainable and ethical way.


During 2007 high profile criticism of environmentally friendly supermarket bags focused on claims of cheap labour and unethical manufacture .
Clearly environmental and ethical values are positioned close together in people's minds and increasingly manufacturers of reusable and sustainable products are being asked about their ethics.
